“These Safe Haven Baby Boxes extend our mission to protect life by offering a safe, secure, and anonymous option for anyone facing an incredibly difficult decision. With overwhelming community support, we are honored to place two boxes into service on the same day; proof that compassion and action can come together to save lives,” said Chief Walsh. “My hope is that it’s never needed, but if it is, it provides an anonymous, welcoming, no-judgment way to safely surrender a baby and save a life.”

The latest additions took place earlier today at AMFEMS Station 39 – 4700 Murphy Lane and AMFEMS Headquarters—Station 31 located at 108 Urton Lane. Each secured box is climate-controlled and equipped with sensors that activate a silent alarm to on-duty staff when the door opens, ensuring an immediate response.

In 2019, Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS (AMFEMS) merged with the Eastwood Fire District to improve emergency response across the region. The Fisherville station, originally designed as a small volunteer facility, has long struggled to meet modern operational needs.

These limitations have impacted staffing flexibility and emergency response coverage in the Fisherville area. To better serve our community and workforce, in September 2025, AMFEMS purchased the property at 14714 Taylorsville Road to build a modern fire station designed for today’s emergency service needs.

Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS (AMFEMS) proudly marked the official placement of Quint 38 into service today with a traditional fire apparatus “push‑in” ceremony, celebrating both fire service heritage and the department’s continued commitment to the community.

Chief Pat Walsh, members of the Board of Trustees, firefighters, EMS personnel, and community members gathered to recognize the addition of the tractor‑drawn aerial apparatus, which will serve the Norton Commons neighborhood and surrounding areas in the district.

“This ceremony represents far more than putting a truck in service,” said Chief Walsh. “It reflects teamwork, professional pride, and our responsibility to be thoughtful stewards of public resources while providing our crews with the tools they need to protect our community.”

Quint 38 is a “new‑to‑us” apparatus previously operated by the Jeffersontown Fire District. At an approximate purchase cost of $1 million, including upgrades and a new paintjob, the truck provides the capabilities of a new $3 million apparatus while demonstrating strong fiscal responsibility. Despite its prior service, the truck remains a highly capable, front‑line unit. Its tractor‑drawn design allows it to maneuver efficiently through the narrow streets of Norton Commons, while also carrying 300 gallons of water, a substantial complement of hose, a pump for initial fire attack, and expanded storage for specialized rescue equipment. Quint 38 will serve as the primary truck company for the northern portion of the district. This apparatus is also sometimes referred to as a Hook & Ladder.

The push‑in ceremony honors a long‑standing fire service tradition dating back to the horse‑drawn era, symbolizing community involvement, shared responsibility, and pride in service.

A total of 67 residents were displaced as a result of the fire. Of those, 11 were relocated to another building owned by Arcadia, located at 903 Blankenbaker. The remaining 56 residents were able to reunite with family members and, with assistance coordinated at Southeast Christian Church and transportation support from TARC, were able to return home with loved ones.
